Art 3/4
At the art 3/4 level, students are working rather independently with the guidance of the instructor. Creative possibilities are endless, along with the freedom of choice of style and material.
Students are required to create 10 small, 5 large, or a mixture of the two styles of projects for the year. Students are required to align their projects to standards, they choose which standards apply to which projects, but at the end of the year all standards must be met. When turning in projects, students turn in written paragraph descriptions for their Artist Statements, which directly address their chosen standards. |
Sight Drawing

Sighting is a technique that allows us to draw from life and keep proportions. Students learn to measure what they are drawing with a pencil and can enlarge or shrink their drawing on their paper, while keeping items in proportion. This leads to more realistic drawing and bypasses the tricks the brain plays on us while viewing an object or subject.
Individual Curriculum, Hitting Standards
Oil Painting:
Describe how organizational principles are used to elicit emotional responses. In my oil painting, I organized colors in specific ways in order to create certain atmospheres with certain feelings. For example, at the end of the path in the painting I used yellow, brown, and white in various values to give a sunny, peaceful atmosphere. The organization of these colors is supposed to give the viewer the feeling of being in a quiet forest on a sunny fall day. The trees in the foreground for the most part are made up of greens and blues. These present a cool, calm atmosphere. Intentionally use art materials and tools when applying techniques and skills to communicate ideas. I used several different types of brushes in order to create different visual effects in my oil painting. Most of the time I used small, round brushes. I used these to create small leaves or leaves in the distance, as with the sunlit part of the painting. When I wanted to create leaves in the foreground of the painting, I used larger round brushes and strokes that were further apart, whereas with smaller leaves I kept my strokes closer together. When I painted the road and the runner, I used hard brushes that had straight edges because I needed to create solid lines. Apply knowledge and skill to symbolize the essence of an idea.In order to create distance between different elements of my painting, I had to use different techniques and brush strokes. I used smaller, closer together strokes to show leaves in the distance. I also used the size of my brush strokes to show leaves closer in distance by creating larger, more loosely placed brush strokes. Because I wanted the runner to appear to be in the middle of the trail, I made her medium-sized in proportion to the leaves on the trees. Identify, define problems, and reflect upon possible visual solutions: In my oil painting, I identified problems with the texture of the leaves on the ground in the left side of the painting. By using a different shade of brown, I wasn't able to get the same effect when I added yellow, and it turned out more of a greenishgray. To solve this problem, I decided I could either add the other shade of brown in small patches later or do a wash over the area of the leaves. I knew if I added the brown later all the colors would make it muddy, so in order to solve this problem did a wash of brown and waited to add the leafy texture with the right brown and yellow. Because I had done the same thing earlier on the right side, it created the visual effect I wanted and balanced out the two sides. Use knowledge of art and design history to inform personal artwork: The painting techniques I am using in my oil painting are similar to those of the Impressionism movement, because rather than relying on a super realistic depiction, I'm using loose brush strokes and intense colors to capture light and create trees and leaves that may look sloppy or amateurish up close, but from far away they create an optical effect that brings the painting together. Evaluate the quality and effectiveness of one's artwork:Ifeel that my depiction of soft yellow light and empty woods effectively portrays the peacefulness of the trail in the painting. My use of soft, impressionist like brush strokes aids this effect, as does my use of warm colors and blending around the tree branches to create softer edges. |
